T-Shirts Fly Into The Stands
Thursday, August 14, 2008 @ 13:05:27 CDT by RICKYSNIDER (14 reads)
KSP NewsNeal writes
T-Shirts were flying into the stands during the intermission at KSP Saturday night. The race team of Levi Hodges sponsored the flying t-shirts and, in a scene reminiscent of ones I’ve seen at much larger events, a t-shirt cannon was employed to launch the t-shirts into the stands from out on the track. I was over in the pits when this scene began to unfold and at first I wasn’t sure what was going down. I heard screaming coming from the fans in the stands and upon first glance I thought perhaps a popular driver, you know, someone like Jacob Pirkle or Jeff Turner or perhaps Darryl Campbell, was walking the track and a war had broken out to see which section could show the most support! As I was trying to figure out who it might be, I heard the cannon go off, launching a t-shirt into the stands and the fans jumping to try and retrieve it! WOW! What a cool way to promote your race team and give back to the fans!! These guys really took it to a new level! It was great to see the Hodges team do this for the fans! Outstanding team promotion guys!

There were nine Junior Minis on hand to race and they really came to race! The Heat race was won by Amerin Betteridge. In the Feature for these young stars of tomorrow, a mid race pileup in turn 4 looked to have taken out three of the contenders, Colin Cloud, Amerin Betteridge and Calton Pritchett, but as it turned out, two of them were able to make repairs and return. Calton was the only one unable to return. Devin Burgess was fast and smooth, taking the win over Betteridge who worked his way back up from the rear of the field, Bryce Pritchett who had engine trouble in the heat, ran strong in this race, Zacary Raybourn who picked his way thru the mishaps to secure fourth and Don Yeargen who ran strong but suffered a position robbing spin to finish in fifth.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks put on an exciting show as some bumping and grinding exposed frayed nerves and hot tempers between some of the drivers. A struggle over a preferred line between Allen Montgomery and Justin Fowler resulted in Allen jumping over a tractor tire and, as he came down nose first, it looked for a second like he might go end over end! He recovered, settled the car back on all four and continued on, seemingly unscathed! Charles Cosper survived all the struggles and took the checkers over Chris Hughes, Eric Swift, Colt Lancer and Justin “McNizzle” McNeil.

The IMCA Stock Cars were very competitive again, not that it’s a surprise. John McNeil won the heat race holding off hard charges by Pritchett, Estes and Turner. John is proving to be a serious threat to the Turner / Pritchett Dynasty! I expect to see him in Victory Lane ahead of those guys soon! Take those four names and shuffle them to get the finishing order in the Feature! Turner and Estes ran door-to-door  for the first half of the race, neither one being able to gain an advantage! But, after the halfway point, Turner was able to pull ahead of Estes and hold on for the win! Estes, Pritchett, McNeil and Robert Ferron round out the top 5.

The Sport Mods were out in force tonight as they had to run a B-Main to qualify the starting field for the Feature! Blake Baccus, George Gafford, Justin Blackburn and Curtis Young were the heat race winners. Jacob Pirkle won the B-Main over Gary Fox, Martel Kerr, Kayla Maxey and Corey Range. Did you catch that?? Kayla Maxey comes home in fourth in the B-Main!! Outstanding run for this former Young Gun!! The Feature race was interesting. Jeff Turner broke during the heat race and had to borrow a car from Brandon Ruffin. Starting back in mid pack he drove the borrowed car to a sixth place finish. Kayla Maxey had trouble right off the bat and left on the hook. Very unfortunate considering the momentum she had going! But George Gafford was on track tonight, winning the race over Dean Abbey, Jeff Emerson, Justin Blackburn and Jacob Pirkle.

How about the Modifieds?? Twenty-five cars were entered in the heats. Chad Estes had his car here as did Dillon Smith, Charles Armstrong, Jeff Emerson, Chad Melton and Kevin Watson, adding to the car count. Heat winners Chad Estes, Dillon Smith, and Jeff Emerson were all serious contenders, but Estes was not to be denied as he held off Jeremy Willis, Bobby Ruffin, Nicholas Littlejohn and Glen Hibbard for the Feature win. Jason Ilich, Darryl Campbell and Scotty Brown all had trouble and finished in the back of the field. Chad, in his new Hoffman Chassis, had the car dialed in tonight and was bad fast all night! This Central Texas Hot Shoe has both of his new cars running well and is providing the local hot shoes some real competition!

The Crate Late Models had six cars here tonight and gave us a taste of what to expect when this class comes into its own. These cars look great out on the clay oval and with the drivers beginning to get a good handle on the setups, their performances are getting better and better! Jason Ilich won the heat but had mechanical trouble in the Feature and had to drop out. Jay Bransom had his car dialed in and won the race over Eric Winnett, Larry Lee Charlie Wilson and Darryl Campbell.

Street Stock action was fast and furious as always. Tim Murray and Duane Wolff were the heat winners. Duane Wolf backed up his heat win with another strong finish, racking up his fifth in a row! Duane started on the fifth row outside and had to work his way thru tough traffic and survive several cautions. Tim Murray led several laps and looked to have the race well in hand, but the cautions kept the field bunched and Duane was able to catch him and grab the checkers again!

Still Doing Work Son Pirkle 41
Monday, August 11, 2008 @ 17:19:27 CDT by N_Jones (15 reads)
KSP Newspandaracing writes
Jacob Pirkle #41 in Sportmods ran another great race on Saturday Night. He started towards that back of the pack and worked his way up to 5th in 20 laps. The guy who won the race started towards the front of the pack and managed to hold back the other cars. But it has to be said if there where 10 more laps Jacob would have taken 1st. So watch out guys he knows what he is doing, and before you know it he is on your tail chasing you down for another spot. Fear is the name of the Race.

Jacob Pirkle had the fans going wild Saturday Night.   They had signs that said Nuthin but Legal and Doin it Clean.  They were all really excited.  It has been a pleasure watching him race through the season.  He has come a long way in five years.  Among his Fans He had his Mom Laura, Sister Amanda, Brother in Law Stevan, Uncle Greg, Grandma Peggy, and about 40 friends.  He told me that he would like to thank all his friend and family for coming out.  He is just glad that the season is turning out good, after not so good seasons in the past.  Well I think Jacob Pirkle is running great races and It just proves that he has Skill.  If you havn't been watching 41 keep your eye on him.  He races to impress.  The slogan he has on the back of his car is Do work Son!  That is what he does week after week.  If you know of any sponsors who are looking to sponsor a clean team please contact him.

What Numbers Were Hot On August 2nd
Monday, August 04, 2008 @ 15:34:56 CDT by RICKYSNIDER (30 reads)
KSP NewsNeal writes
One, two, four or eight; It seemed that if you had a chance to win tonight at KSP, you had to have one of these numbers on your car! Duane Wolff in the #1 Street Stock was the first A-Main winner of the evening. Double that #1 and you will have the winner of the Junior Mini Feature, none other than the #2 of Amerin Betteridge. Double that #2 and it will reveal the winner of the Hobby Stock Feature, the #4 of Chase Neill. Put another #4 beside that one and you will have the winner of the Modified Feature, the #44 of Scotty Brown. Divide that number by 2 and you will get the winner of the I-Stock race, only you would have to have been there to know that B.J. Dulock of CenTex Motorsports was actually behind the wheel of Duain Pritchett’s back-up car, the old #22. Add all those numbers up and you will get the #146 which don’t tell you nothing… but, if you add a 2 to that, you will discover the winner of the Sport Mod race, the #148 of Donnie Blackburn. Take the modified race cars out of the picture and add up the numbers on the doors of the stock car winners and you will have the winner of the Crate Late Model Feature, the #29 of Jay Bransom. Now, just what is the significance of all this banter? Heck, I don’t know… It just seemed odd to me that those numbers kept turning up in the winner’s circle.

What I do know is, forgetting the numbers, the racing was as hot as the weather! Duane Wolff has logged four feature wins in a row, and has only finished out of the top spot once since July 3rd. Tim Murray took a pretty good run at him tonight, but was unable to knock him out of the top spot.

The Junior Minis were well represented tonight with ten cars on the lineup board. The trouble was, they had a rough night, loosing the 21 of Bryce Pritchett to a blown motor and a couple of others to mishaps, including the 22 of Calton Pritchett. Calton’s been on a run of bad luck lately, and it looks like it’s still doggin him. Amerin Betteridge survived an on track incident that took the other car out but spared him. He did suffer cosmetic damage but the handling was unaffected and he went on to win the A-Main.

The IMCA Modifieds were charged up tonight and with Chad Estes starting on the pole in his new car, it looked like he might be the car to beat. He shot off the line and set a blistering pace around the track, stretching out a pretty healthy lead over the rest of the field. However, with a couple of cautions bunching the field and some of the cars working their way up thru traffic, his lead began to see some challenges. Darryl Campbell who started on the second row found his groove and was running strong, it was good to see him up front, but apparent mechanical issues took him out with 2 to go.

Matt Martin, Bobby Ruffin and Scotty Brown all started together in mid pack. The cars were all so competitive tonight that it took some real driving skills to work thru traffic. I watched this trio work their way to the front and they really put on a show! They were runnin high, dodgin low, cutting thru the middle and workin that traffic like their tails were on fire! It was great!

When it was over, Scotty had squeezed by Estes when he made a bobble coming out of turn 2. If Estes hit his marks in that turn he would shoot down the back stretch like he was shot from a cannon. But, there was a rut there that gave him some grief if he hit it and Scotty was able to capitalize on one of those times. Estes had a stranglehold on second and finished just ahead of Ruffin, Martin and Jeremy Willis to round out the top 5. Jason Ilich, Trevor Egbert, Mike Miles, Ron Vandiver and Damon Hammond complete the list of top 10 cars in this exciting and very competitive race!

Duain Pritchett, now there is always something going on in their pit! These guys just know how to have a good time! Duain pulls into the pits with a new race car, painted to match the one he’s been driving all year. I told him I wanted a picture before he bent it! Well, he’s runnin a little late and in a hurry to hot lap the new car so he suits up, straps in while it’s still on the trailer, backs it off and heads straight for the track. I snap a couple of shots as he’s leaving and hope he doesn’t get it too muddy hot lapping! Well, I see him heading back to the pit after the practice laps and notice the tires on the right side are white walled! We soon find out that he hit some mud leaving the track and slapped the wall in the exit shoot! Of course, he was met with a hearty round of jests as he clambered out of the new car! But, he took it all in stride, wearing that ornery grin he is famous for the whole time! I holler at him to strike a pose before he leaves the car to which he declares, “Ah Neal, I don’t want my picture took”. I convince him that he does and I get one before he gets away.

They brought the old car to the track and B.J. Dulock was lined up to drive it. And drive it he did! He started on the front row and never looked back! Chad Estes gave him a good chase and of course Turner and Pritchett were breathing down his neck, but ole’ B.J. stole the show tonight. Now, they say it’s easy to win from the front row, and sometimes that’s true, but with the level of competition you see at KSP in this class, you aint gonna win too easy! Dulock, Turner, Estes, Pritchett, McNeill, Rime, Ferron, Rasor, Wofford and Price round out the top 10.

How about the IMCA Southern Sport Mods; who are we gonna talk about here…. Let’s start with Kayla Maxey. She’s doing a great job in her car racing against some of the best in the nation every week here at KSP! She got tangled up in a mess during her heat race, but came back out for the Feature and finished a very respectable eighth out of 14 cars! Watching her drive, you would never guess she is a teenage girl. But then, most of the ones I deal with aren’t on a race track, their on a street or highway putting on makeup while talking on a cell phone and trying to drive! But I suspect Kayla’s smarter than that! At least I’ve not seen her doing such in her race car. She’s too busy trying to race the boyz! Keep it up Kayla, we’ll see you in victory lane in due time!

As for the rest of the field, well this was Justin Blackburn’s night to shine! Not only did his team do a candy call for the kids, but he won the feature race as well! The number four seemed to be significant in the show tonight as the 148 of Blackburn, the 41 of Jacob Pirkle and the 4 of Jeff Turner were front runners all night. That is until Turner suffered a right-rear flat and had to pull out of the race. This left Blackburn and Pirkle to battle for the checkers, and battle they did! Pirkle was all over the leader and the last lap was an all out dash for the finish line! With Blackburn getting the win, Pirkle, Jason Ilich, George Gafford, Dean Abbey, George Egbert, Chase Jupe, Kayla Maxey, Corey Range and Brandon Ruffin round out the top 10.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks were hot tonight as well! It looked like it was going to be all about the fours in that race as well! The 44 of Brian Sewell and the 48 of Justin Fowler were door to door in an all out duel for the lead at the halfway mark when Fowler had a tire go down and cause him to spin. He changed the tire and came back out, but it appeared his suspension had suffered damage and he was unable to make up the lost ground. Soon after that, the 4 of Chase Neill who had barely missed being collected by the spin of Fowler, rose to battle Sewell for the lead, but during the next caution, Sewell pulled off with mechanical issues and it was all about Chase Neill from there on out! He won the race with Charles Cosper, Eric Swift, Brandon Taylor, Allen Montgomery, the one and only “McNizzle”, Jeremy Montgomery, Alvin Emery, Chip Trueblood and Justin Fowler rounding out the top 10. And yes… take a look at that 4th place car piloted by rookie driver Brandon Taylor! Good finish for this former Young Gun who is starting to figure this Hobby Stock class out!

And that leaves us with the Crate Late Models. This fledgling class is struggling to get up and going, but not more so than just about any new class we have seen across the years. But the guys that are sticking with the effort are sure doing a great job of figuring those dirt beasts out! Darryl Campbell looked the best I’ve seen him in his heat race. He was sailing around the oval as smooth as silk and was lightening fast! It’s good to see him get that car figured out and running so well! The Feature race went to Jay Bransom who seemed to have a better setup for the drier track conditions than they had in the heat. Darryl struggled in this race and wasn’t as competitive as he was earlier but I’m sure he’ll continue to tweak on it and get it figured out.  Jason Ilich, Ronnie Davis, Darryl Campbell and Charlie Wilson round out the finishing order for this race.
That concludes another great night of racing at Kennedale Speedway Park! With race teams that include several of the nations top drivers and some of the hottest rookies, they always put on a great show! If you weren't there, you should have been! I'll see ya at the races! Neal.

New and strong upcomer

I have really been impressed with a good driver in the Southern Sportmods. His number is 41 and his name is Jacob Pirkle. He is coming out Friday evening to go for 4 in a row at Grand Prairie Speedway. If he wins at that track he will be heading KSP  Speedway Saturday evening for 3 in a row at that track. For a driver doing that good with no sponsers he must be a very good driver. If there  is anyone out there looking to sponser a driver I think he would be a very good driver to sponser.

Jacob Pirkle is nothing but a clean driver.  If you watch him he will start at the back and work his way up.  He has come a long way in his racing career.  I remember seeing him when he raced go-carts many years ago.  This boy has skill, he knows where to be at all time.  The rest of the guys are getting mad because he is coming from behind in points, and is now a threat to other drivers in national points.  They went as far a making him break down his motor completely last week on the track and send off parts for testing.  Guess what Fans he is 100% Legal.  To the non fans and other driver quit crying and run a clean race.

Top 5 Contender

CHECK OUT KYLE MILLER ! I HATE TO BOAST, BUT KYLE HAS COME A LONG WAY. AFTER STARTING 5 RACES INTO THE SEASON, AND MISSING THREE RACES SINCE HE HAS MOVED INTO 7TH IN POINTS. HE HAS 9 TOP 5 FINISHES IN THE 12 RACES HE HAS RUN (IN JR. MINI'S). THIS IS HIS FIRST YEAR RACING (ANYTHING). IF YOU WERE THERE, YOU REMEMBER HIM HITTING THE WALL HEAD ON IN HIS FIRST RACE. SINCE THEN HE HAS BOUNCED BACK AND COME ON STRONG. ALTHOUGH WE DON'T HAVE MUCH OF A CAR, HE HAS DONE THE BEST HE CAN WITH WHAT HE HAS. WE ARE WORKING ON A CAR FOR NEXT YEAR, BUT COULD USE A LITTLE HELP (SOME SPONSORS WOULD BE NICE). ALL I ASK IS A LOOK. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A DRIVER OR SOMEONE TO SPONSOR, JUST TAKE A LOOK.

Chase Jupe Wins Big At KSP!
Friday, July 04, 2008 @ 16:46:05 CDT by RICKYSNIDER (82 reads)
KSP NewsNeal writes
Kennedale Speedway Park had its annual Fourth of July Celebration on Thursday Night, only this year there was an extra added kick. Not only were the purses padded, the IMCA Southern Sport Mods were running their third regional show with points awarded for their participation! Let me tell you… that really brought out the cars! With 64 Sport Mods on the line up board for the heats, it was sure to be a great show!

Although the Sport Mods were highlighting the event, the other classes were blessed with ample representation as well! The IMCA Modifieds were strong in their count with 41 cars here to compete for the win. The IMCA Stock Cars had one of the best turnouts I’ve seen this year! With 23 on the lineup board for the heats, they were sure to put on a good show. IMCA Hobby Stocks were well represented with 28 and the Street Stocks were showing 23 as well.

When I pulled into KSP, the pits were packed, the spectator parking lot was packed, and the grandstands were packed! Now, that’s a great sight to see! In a year that has seen so many economic factors working against the sport, it was good to see the Independent American Spirit alive and well, defying the odds to seek Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness!

But the biggest winner tonight was Chase Jupe. Chase is battling for championships on several different fronts, from the National Scene all the way down to the Local Level. Being a regular contender at two of our area speedways, H.O.T. and KSP, Chase and his team are striving for a track championship at one or both of those tracks. But, the State and regional points are in line after that for the team that is primarily funded by family owned businesses that include Jupe Trucking, Kevin Jupe Trucking, Cen-Tex Ag Trucking, Leroy Trucking and a lot of help from Cen-Tex Motorsports . Chase’s father, Kevin, and good friend Butch Nix are dedicated to helping make sure he has what he needs to contend for that goal.

Battling tough local legends such as Jeff Turner and Keith White, who are in their own battles for those same championships, Chase has really had to stay focused and determined to keep in the running for such a lofty goal. Debuting his own “Hurricane Chassis” this season after running the five previous years in a shop built chassis he bought from a friend, Chase has proven he is serious about the business of dirt oval racing! He took the chassis he had been running, added a few modifications to its design, tweaked them a little and came up with the “Hurricane Chassis”. With a little help from Kevin and Butch, they built the car over the winter and had it ready to debut this season. It has shown to be a real contender with Chase at the wheel.

Tonight at Kennedale Speedway Park was no exception! Chase qualified for the A-Main right out of his heat. With the level of competition on hand tonight, that in and of itself was a victory! This spared him the agony of having to run in the B-Mains where the level of desperation as well as the car count is increased. His luck continued by drawing a front row starting spot on top of everything else. With a dry track condition like they were facing for the A-Main, track position was crucial! Jay Bransom was to start on the front row pole with Chase to his outside.

The early lead was nabbed by Bransom who had the preferred spot for the start of the race and it looked like he would be hard to beat. Chase could get up to him, but with the speed being around the bottom of the track, passing on the outside was unlikely. However, several laps into the event, Bransom had a mechanical failure that sent him to the infield. This was a continuation of Chase’s good fortune as he inherited the lead and led the rest of the race. Strong challenges were mounted by Jeff Day and Keith White, but Chase did an outstanding job of keeping his cool, hitting his marks and holding the lead to take the checkers on his first ever “Big Event” win! Congratulations Chase on a job well done!! To Kevin Jupe and Butch Nix I say, “This makes it all worthwhile, huh!” Chase, it’s good to see you in the Winner’s Circle again! With your talent and people like your dad and Butch to back you up, the sky is the limit!

Back in the pits after the conclusion of the race program, Chase pulled up to his hauler after winning the show and I saw one of the biggest grins I ever saw on his face. The area around his pit stall had began to gather quite a crowd, several of them being fans that were here from the Waco area to see the show. Chase was obviously humbled by all the attention as the crowd began to shower him with congratulatory remarks, but he really got nervous when J M Hallas walked up and began to interview him. Talk about turning red…. It was a sight to see! We had to tell him to lift his head up so pictures of the occasion could be taken that would show something besides his cap!

Neal.

Independence Day Holiday Weekend Special, Kennedale Speedway Park, 7/3/0

By J M Hallas

Kennedale, Tx., (July 3rd, 2008) Independence Day weekend kicked off Thursday night at Kennedale Speedway Park on the semi- banked 1/4 mile clay oval with the third in a series of IMCA Regional Southern Sportmod races, plus the regular classes and capped off with a fireworks show to complete the evening's event

Over 60 IMCA SSM checked in to battle for the top 21 spots to start the feature and pick up the all important Regional points, as well a state and local points. Headlining the list of drivers were defending SSM Champion Jeff Turner, inaugural and two-time champ, Keith White, along with hot shoes Steve Hayes, Tim Clonch, Troy Taylor and Glen Leuschner, to name a few.

Jupe Jumps to Biggest Sportmod Score

Chase Jupe scored his biggest ever IMCA Southern Sportmod victory in the 25-lap Regional race, being in the right spot at the right time. Jupe chased early leader, Jay Bransom and capitalized on Bransom's misfortune. Unlucky lap 13 was Bransom's undoing as he broke a distributer and rolled silently off to the infield, with Jupe inheriting the lead and holding back late charges from Jeff Day and Keith White.

The 21-car SSM Regional main started with Bransom and Jupe on row 1 and maybe even bigger news, defending champ Jeff Turner a spectator after problems kept him from qualifying. Bransom was first into turn 1, with Jupe falling in line second. Jacob Pirkle got by Jason Gore on lap 1 for third, as Bo Day did a 1/2 spin loosing fifth spot. Pirkle got sideways on lap 5 loosing ground to Jupe, while Jeff Day and Keith White got past Gore and Pirkle for third and fourth.

Je. Day and White then ran side by side for third while Pirkle recovered and closed back in on that battle. Pirkle retook fourth from White on lap 8, but White snatched it back on lap 9. Up front the Jupe could close on Bransom in the corners, but Bransom had the pull off and put a car length or two back on Jupe. At the crossed flags it was Bransom, Jupe, Je. Day, White and Pirkle holding down the top five positions.

With Jupe on his tail, Bransom slowed on lap 13 and pulled to the infield handing the top spot to Jupe for lap 14. White began a challenge on Je. Day on lap 16 while B. Day got along side Pirkle for fourth. As White and Je. Day battled for second, Jupe put some distance on the two. Jimmy Day got by Pirkle on lap 20 to find a top five spot.

White, who was keeping the pressure on Je. Day, began his final assault on lap 22. Je. Day held White off and was able to close to within two car lengths of Jupe with two laps to go. As the white flag waved, White got inside Je. Day who tried the high side looking for a way around Jupe. Further back Bo and Jimmy Day both gave up spots as they tangled on the final lap. At the checkers it was Jupe in Kevin Jupe Trucking, Leroy Trucking, Jupe Trucking, Cen-Tex Motorsports powered, Hurricane Chassis holding off White for the biggest win of his young career.

"It was mainly a good starting spot," commented Jupe. " We started outside front row and it was one groove and no passing. Basically the luck of the draw."

"I don't worry about some of these guys coming in for a big race. We usually race here against some tough guys anyway. I just race my race and hope for the best. I just go out and try to hold my line. I know if I mess up that those guys are going to capitalize on it."

"When I saw that Jeff (Turner)wasn't going to make the show I thought about big picture racing. We trail him by only about 35 points for points championship. I just basically wanted to finish. I didn't want to force the issue on anything. If someone came in door slamming me, I was going to just let them have it(the spot). All I wanted to do was finish the race and gain some points."

"I built the car over the winter from scratch. It's been paying off for me. This is five feature wins this year. We just tried to get a car that was better on dry slick and get more rear bite. I think it's worked out great. The guys at Cen-Tex Motorsports give me awesome motors for this car and my big modified. B J Dulock and Kenneth Drake down at Cen-Tex do an awesome job. I can't thank them enough."

Benji Kirkpatrick used track position, then patience to pick up the win in the star-studded IMCA Modified 20-lap A-main. Kirkpatrick stalked early race leader Rick McDaniel and when McDaniel bobbled on lap 14, dove under the leader and took the spot on lap 15. A late race caution rebunched the field, but Kirkpatrick held off all challengers to grab the victory.

As green waved on the 21-car field polesitter McDaniel jumped out front, with Kirkpatrick, from row two, getting by Chris Bragg and Donnie Blackburn for second. Tim Clonch and Scotty Brown both put Blackburn in their wake getting by for fourth and fifth. By lap 5 McDaniel and Kirkpatrick were easing away from Bragg, Clonch, Brown, Glen Hibbard and Cody Smith. In that pack Brown , Smith and Hibbard swapped spots as the race came to halfway.

At the crossed flags it was McDaniel, Kirkpatrick, Bragg, Clonch and Hibbard in the top five. Hibbard was looking inside Clonch for fourth on lap 12, while Smith got by Brown for sixth. Kirkpatrick saw an opening on the bottom during the 14th circuit and dove inside McDaniel coming out with the lead. Kirkpatrick had just began to inch away from McDaniel when the races only caution came out on lap 16 after Jason Ilich, Justin McCoy and Blackburn tangled in turn 3.

On th restart, Kirkpatrick and McDaniel put a slight margin on Clonch and Bragg, while Hibbard lost ground. Hibbard made that ground back up getting fourth back from Bragg, then third from Clonch on lap 18. Up front it was Kirkpatrick trying to shake McDaniel for the win. At the checkers it as Kirkpatrick in the Wilson Chassis Co., Trading House Bar & Grill, Ronnie Symack Construction, Phil's Motorsports, Photos by Debbie, Kinds Automotive, Affiliated Auto Glass, Left Hand Graphics, Ray Smalley powered, Donnie Moore chassis rolling to Victory Lane.

"It started with a good draw," replied Kirkpatrick. "We drew a good number for our heat and it gave us a run to qualify. Then the redraw was a four and that put us up front again. It was dry out there. So it was the fastest race to the bottom and who was able to stay smooth. We had it hooked up tonight."

"When we come to big shows, we just race our own car. You can't worry about everyone else out there. You just have race the track and see who can get around it the fastest. Once I got out front I just tried to hold it on the bottom. If someone can get around you on top, sometimes you just have to let them go ahead and do it. Other times it tells you that you have to speed up a little more."

"Glen Wilson at Wilson Chassis Company has been a lot of help. We've figured a bunch of things on the car the last couple weeks. All the IMCA contingency sponsors give us little incentives. For our first feature win Speedway Motors sent us a $100 gift certificate. All that little stuff helps."

IMCA Stock Cars

The 20-lap, 23-car IMCA Stock Car main was paced to green by two Texas Thunder Speedway drivers, Ronnie Ellis jr. and Eric Jones. Ellis was first into turn 1 while Jeff Turner came out of the four wide fight for fourth with that spot. A multi-car tangle in turn 3 brought the yellow out on lap 1. On the restart Ellis jumped out as Jones tried to hold off Turner for second. Turner picked off the spot on lap 3 leaving Jones battling with Jason Gore.

Turner then got along side Ellis on lap 4 and took over the point on lap 5, as Gore was getting around Jones for third and Duain Pritchett now closing in on Jones. Gore took over second from Ellis on lap 7, while Jones and Pritchett ran side by side with Jones. Coming to halfway it was Turner, Gore, Ellis, Pritchett and Jones in the top five, when Billy McKee spun in turn 3. Turner had no place to run and tagged McKee who was stopped sideways in the middle of the corner.

Once back to green, Turner who was given the lead back, was being pressured by Gore as Pritchett snagged third from Ellis. Turner and Gore ran door to door with Gore getting the nose ahead on lap 11 and securing the top spot on lap 2. Pritchett then moved in on Turner in what started to look like a classic I-Stock battle from the past between the two rivals. Oil on the track brought out a caution on lap 14.

As green waved again, Turner eased back by Pritchett for second. As Pritchett tried to fight back, a side trip through the edge of the infield saw him lose ground. Turner was then able to focus back on Gore for the lead. Turner got the nose inside Gore on lap 17, getting the lead back on lap 18. Cory Davis slowed on lap 18 after hitting or leaving parts laying the front stretch. This set up a green, white, checker run to the finish. Back under green Turner and Gore jumped ahead to settle it among themselves. As the checkers waved it was Turner holding off Gore to snatch the win.

IMCA Hobby Stocks

Polesitter Chase Neill got out front first at the start of the 20-car, 23-lap IMCA Hobby Stock main followed by Jeff Kinnaird and a three wide scramble for third. Charles Cosper took third from Charlie Coleman, with Kyle Harrison trying to follow. Harrison broke and pulled off on lap 3 moving Justin McNeil into third. Coleman and Allen Montgomery then ran side by side for fifth with Coleman getting the position and getting back by McNeil for fourth.

Yellow waved on lap 6 when Justin Fowler spun and stopped on the edge of the track. Once back to green, Neill and Kinnaird pulled away with Cosper and McNeil side by side for third until McNeil toured the infield. Montgomery got around Coleman for fourth on lap 7, while Cosper was looking to get second from Kinnaird, taking the spot on lap 9. At the midway point it was Neill, Cosper, Kinnaird, Montgomery and Coleman rounding out the top five.

The top three began put some distance on the fourth place fight, that Coleman took back on lap 12. Erik Miles brought out the yellow on lap 12 with a spin. Cosper tried to get under Neill as green waved again, as Coleman slowed from third and pulled off. This moved Montgomery back to third and Bryan Sewell, who had start deep in the field, getting fourth on the high side. Kinnaird retook the spot on lap 14.

The final caution came on lap 14 when Jeff Mueller and Andy Roller tangled in turn 1. Neill and Cosper got some distance on Montgomery and Kinnaird as they ran door to door for third. Kinnaird finally cleared Montgomery on lap 15, with Sewell moving in to challenge. Sewell the defending track champ and IMCA Rookie of the Year, was able take fourth on lap 18. Up front it was Neill and Cosper running nose to tail as Cosper looked for an opening or mistake. Neill gave him neither and was able to hang on to grab the checkers.

KSP Street Stocks

The hotly contested Street Stock feature saw David Cooke jump out front early, while Duane Wolff and Jake Upchurch battled side by side for second. Jimmy Gore moved to the high side and got by Wolff for third then along side Upchurch for second. Gore continued his charge up top getting along side Cook on lap 3 as they went a by a lapped car three wide.

Gore got the bumper out front on lap 4, but Cook and Wolff kept their pace racing three abreast for the top spot. Wolff and Gore were door to door for the lead with Wolff eking out the lead on lap 5. Wolff finally secured the top spot, while Chris Davis got around Upchurch for fourth.

The lead group caught the back of the pack on lap 12 and while Wolff got through cleanly, the battle for second was forced to go three wide as they diced by slower cars. Gore and Cook made some contact trying to get by a lapped car, with Davis having no where to go. All three were able to get straightened out and continue, but Wolff was checked out. Davis got past Cook for second in the final laps as the scramble for that spot continued. Wolff easily took the checkers while second through fifth was still up for grabs.

Williams takes the Win; Dudley steals the show..

Twenty-five Jr Mini Stock Cars came to KSP Friday night in the forth of eight scheduled events for 2008, all of which wanted a shot of knocking Dodd City's Shelby Williams off the top.
The night started with Grayson County Speedway's Chance Whitworth taking Heat Race #1 win, followed by Williams taking heat #2, and hometrack hot shoe #2a Amerin Betteridge winning heat #3.

The A-main start decided by passing point format landed another KSP favorite, #64 Devin Burgess on the pole for the scheduled 25 lap feature event. YGS procedures require the last feature race winner to start the rear of the field, and other previous winners start at the end of heat race qualifying cars, Williams and Whitworth started 15th and 20th respectively.
From the drop of the green flag, the top positions were switching spots without switching paint. Early cautions slowed the progress of Williams and Grayson County favorite #32 Mithchell Clement, sending both to the rear of the field. At the restart, both were back on the move, all the while #64 Burgess, #5 Dustin Mooney, #15 Brad Dudley, and #98 Chris Miller, all battling for the top spot.
As the feature event had several cautions, YGS officials had to make the decision to cut the race five laps short, as we were already past the KSP curfew, several of the front runners encountered some tough luck during the middle laps of the race, Dudley took charge of the top position. As laps winded down, Williams and Whitworth were making there way torwards the front. On lap 15, YGS top runner Mooney had engine woes and had pulled to the infield, leaving the battle to Dudley, 2007 YGS Champ Tyler Plum, and the charging Williams.
At the checker, it was #821 followed pretty close by #15 of Dudley, and 17x Plum. GCS regular Chance Whitworth found his way to forth, as pole sitter Devin Burgess made his way back to 5th after bad luck put at the rear of the field during a mid race caution.

During Intermission, the YGS series had a Top 9 in points Bicycle race sponsored by Lake Country Speedway. YGS drivers coupled with ASCS sprint drivers like Kevin Ramey, Kolt Walker, Travis Rilat, Michael "Spike" Lang, Skip Wilson, George White, Trey Robb, and others to complete the field. This wasn't your normal "bike race". "16 boys and girls training bikes were used, the teams had to push their partner about 40 yards, turn around, switch out and get back to the flagstand. A couple of tore up bicycles and screams of "they cheated" later, the team of Brad Dudley and Kolt Walker took Ronny Goulds money. The moral to this race; Don't forget to have a little fun!"

Next show for the YGS will be back at KSP in early October.
