Mike Dual Core Malone is Honored at KSP on Saturday Night!

Mike “Dual Core” Malone is Honored at KSP on Saturday Night!

Story by :Neal

The passing of Mike “Dual Core” Malone has rocked the local racing community! In response to his sudden and unexpected loss, memorial laps were arranged by Chris and April Wright at Kennedale Speedway Park Saturday Night!

Volunteers were recruited by Chris and April as they entered the pit gate and were given instructions for the presentation. Cars from every class at KSP would file out onto the track and on queue begin a procession around the track in honor of Mikes passing.

Keith White was chosen to lead the first lap of the memorial procession from the pole. As they came around to commence lap two, Keith pulled to the infield and set alone just in front of Victory Lane as the rest of the field continued their procession. A very appropriate dirt track version of the “missing man” formation was affected by this maneuver!

As the cars made their way around the track, a rendition of the song Amazing Grace was played on Irish Bagpipes that lent an ethereal touch to the entire experience! After that, Chris Wright offered a prayer for Mike, his family and his many friends! A somber scene it was as the event unfolded before our eyes! Mike would have been amazed at all the fuss being made over him!

To cap off the evenings program, Keith White dedicated his Feature win to Mike and his Memory! And to be sure, it was no ordinary win! It was a win the spirit of which I’m sure Mike would have reveled in!

Keith was caught up in a multi car crash in his heat race that caused heavy damage to his rear suspension! Damage that would have parked most cars for the evening! But, the indomitable spirit of the American Race Car Driver prevailed as Keith began to disassemble his mangled car, with the help of a few friends! And, low and behold, they had that car ready to race when Feature time rolled around! Keith gave special thanks to The Pritchett Racing Team, The Bissonnette Racing Team, The Team of Dillon Smith, The Team of Jay Bransom, the Abbey Racing Team, Kirk Martin and Richard Brown and his dad!

TRAILER-RACE RULES
Friday, June 12, 2009 @ 11:35:27 Eastern Daylight Time by rickysnider (34 reads)
TRAILER-RACE
July 25th

Pull car can be any full-sized car, small van or pickup truck. Tow vehicle and trailer must have number or symbol on it or tracking purposes. Seat belts required. Helmet, long-sleeved shirt highly suggested and eye protection is MANDATORY. Windshield of tow vehicle can remain in place to protect driver however if the windshield is missing, there must be some type of guard/shield to protect driver from debris entering the vehicle.

Overall trailer length: 10 ft. minimum and 20 ft. maximum.

Travel trailer/pop-up camper, boat or whatever trailer is eligible. Get creative. This makes for more carnage for fans to watch and you to drive thru/around!

Boats must be gutted. No motors, fuel tanks or out-drives allowed.

Travel trailer/campers must be completely cleaned-out inside, removing anything that is not part of unit (i.e. pots/pans, clothes, silverware, trash, household items or anything that is not a permanent part of trailer as manufactured.)  Pop-ups must be raced in fully extended/popped-up position. All hazmat materials must be removed.

Glass must be removed.

Tongue must be attached to tow vehicle by hitch and ball, free pivoting. Safety chains are allowed.

Ballast or weight cannot be added.

Mascots, decorating vehicles, advertising nicknames, cartoons, etc…are encouraged.

NO SUGGESTIVE LANGUAGE OR FOUL SYMBOLS ON CARS OR TRAILERS.

NO driver’s door hits. The object is to knock out the trailer... so there will be some contact, but make safe and smart decisions.

Starting position priority will be given to longer trailers. This makes for a more interesting race.

OBJECT OF RACE:
Finish race with your trailer attached while trying to separate the trailers of your opponents from their tow vehicle. If you lose your trailer, you will be disqualified and you will be black-flagged. Length of race is at least 15 laps unless only one trailer/tow vehicle combo remains intact. In that event, they will be declared the winner. Track promoter has the final say on verification of winner and actions that are conducted on the track.

Kinnaird Wins From The Back At KSP!

KSP News
Kinnaird Wins From The Back At KSP!

Jeff Kinnaird had a rough start to the evening at KSP! He was involved in a spin that he was ultimately charged with and sent off the track during his heat race. That put him at the back of the 17 car field to start the Feature. Well, worse things have happened and after all, it was a Full Moon! With that fact in mind, it was no telling what might happen!

But Jeffrey was not going to just give up and settle for a back row seat…. NO SIREE! He dutifully lined up at the rear of the pack, held his spot until the green flag dropped on the field of Stellar IMCA Hobby Stock Drivers, then proceeded to pick them off one by one!

Now, by stellar field, I mean a track full of Hard Core Hobby Stockers the likes of Allen Montgomery, who, after a lack luster season last year, has really got his groove back this season and has been HOT! Then there is Bryan Sewell… now “Flyin Bryan”, as we like to call him, has really been on a roll this year as well! If he could keep the tires on that car he would win every race he is in! And how about Chase Neill… with a car from the garage of Street Stock Legend, Duane Wolfe, this guy is a frequent… and I mean FREQUENT visitor to Victory Lane!

Allen has a cousin in the field… Jeremy Montgomery. Jeremy is really coming into his own this season and has become a major player in the Hobby Stock Action at KSP this year! How about Justin “McNizzle” McNeil? This kid was “up on the wheel” last night and looked like he had ‘em covered for a while! Keep an eye on this speedster! He is climbing the charts week by week! And don’t forget Alvin Emery… he’s no stranger to this track and always runs well. Or, Aaron Bayles, he was loose in the turns but a rocket on the straights last night, leading most of his heat race! Chris Hughes was a lightning bolt in his heat as well! He won his heat but dropped out early in the Feature.

I said all that to say this; getting to the front with all those hot shoes in front of you is by no means an easy task! Well, Kinnaird, as I said earlier, set about picking them off one by one! The first several laps were caution plagued, something that helped Jeff but hurt Justin who was leading up front! Every time he would get some real estate between himself and the rest of the field, a caution would fly for some incident that could only be chalked up to the “Full Moon”!

Justin put up a valiant effort and led darn near half of the race before the Montgomery boys and Kinnaird, (yes, I said Kinnaird!), caught him and started workin him over! Allen is workin Justin over on the high side when he sees Kinnaird make a dive on the bottom! They enter Turn 1 three wide! Jeff gets some bite coming off the bottom and takes the lead as they head off down the backstretch! Jeremy gets by Justin for 3rd and gets beside Allen to battle door to door for 2nd! Jeremy takes the spot but these two battle back and forth for a couple of laps until Allen settles into the spot.

So… what about Sewell, Neill, Emery and the others… Well they’ve either been having accidents, avoiding accidents or blowing tires! Sewell and Neill both blew tires before the half and had to change left rears, putting them at the back to restart. (The Hot Pit was a pretty happenin place tonight!) Sewell kept his tires up and battled back to 5th! With 5 to go, Chase Neill blew another tire and left the track! Jeremy Carter, who’d been running well, blew a tire and had to change it under green!

OK, where were we? Let’s see… OH! Kinnaird had just taken the lead! Allen and Jeremy are in a tight battle for 2nd! McNizzle is hot on their tails in 4th! Alvin Emery, Sewell, Brandon Williams and Aaron Bayles are the top 8! That’s with about 3 to go! Before the checkers fly, Sewell gets by Emery and Bayles gets past Williams.

Jeff Kinnaird comes from the back to take the win in one of the best races of the evening! Allen, Jeremy, McNizzle, and Sewell round out the top 5! Emery, Bayles, Williams, Cade Lee and Todd Hefner round out the top 10!

Word in the pits is that Jeff has a new car just about ready to debut! I didn’t confirm that, but it will be interesting to see that car when it hits the track! Congratulations Jeff on a great race! And to those Montgomery Gents for their stellar performance as well! (Did you catch that play on words there?) And how about Justin McNeil! What a great job by this young racer to hang tough with this bunch of rowdies and finish 4th! And to Sewell for “Flyin” back thru the field after that flat to finish 5th!

What a great night of IMCA Hobby Stock Action in spite of the Dreaded Full Moon!

David Murray Jr. Wows The Crowd at KSP!
Wednesday, April 08, 2009 @ 08:28:05 Eastern Daylight Time by rickysnider (93 reads)
KSP NewsNEAL writes

IMCA’s most frequent visitor to Victory Lane at tracks all across the country decided to drop in at Kennedale Speedway Park on Saturday Night and see if he could add a notch to his gun with a win at the famed Texas track. Word was out that he was in the area after winning the Feature at Boyd the previous evening, but no one expected him to show up at KSP. Word was he would travel to Ardmore and race there. Instead, he decided to give KSP a go along with racing pal, Chris Bragg.

With 4 National Titles and over 400 Feature wins, Murray finds himself looking for new challenges to inspire his interest. Traveling to various tracks around the country and adding them to his “Been There, Done That” list seems to be his interest now. Therefore, it’s no telling where he might pop up next.

What he did at KSP Saturday night was amazing! He started on the back row of the 8 car heat race. When they crossed the line to complete the first lap, yes the first lap, he was leading! He came out of Turn 2 in the high groove and blew down the backstretch like a rocket sled on rails! I’m sure he sucked the rivets out of some of those cars as he flew by! Well, that left the pack racing for second place! He entered a different time zone after that!

And guess who won the second Modified heat! None other than Darryl Campbell! Darryl, King of the Two Bar Mafia, has been a rocket this season and certainly was Saturday night! You might be interested to know who he outran in that heat! How about Benji Kirkpatrick, Thomas Clark, Chad Estes and John Gober! If you know anything about the racers in this area, you know those drivers are fast! For Darryl to have bested them is no small feat!

I thought it was interesting that when asked if they “found something” over the winter that gave them more speed, Bob remarked that indeed they had! But, they were reluctant to say what it was. He added that it was something so simple that they couldn’t believe they hadn’t found it before! Slider is known to have remarked “Darryl had the parking brake on didn’t he”.

When the Feature rolled around for these IMCA Modifieds, there were 24 in the starting lineup! Now, I can assure you, this race was no ordinary race at KSP! No Sir! It seemed like everything that could happen did! It took several tries to get the first lap in. When things did settle down and they got the race fully underway, there were 16 cars left in the field. Murray had ended up on a tire in Turn 2 while running second on the previous caution  and had to restart in the back. So, as I said, that put him squarely back in 16th! I knew with that turn of events the stage was set for a display of driving that was certain to WOW the Crowd!
And sure enough! He went from 16th to 5th in 4 laps! He tore thru that field like a carjacker on a California freeway! The forward bite he had coming out of the turns… well, let me just say this… He didn’t need that left front tire! I was sitting in the pit stands in Turn 4. He would drive into that turn so deep and fast that I was sure he would scale the wall and land in the seat in front of me every lap! That car never was straight on the track! He would be slideways when he entered Turn 3 and by the time he reached the apex, he was lookin at the flagpole in the center of the infield! You talk about exciting dirt track action! David Murray Jr. really put on a show!

On the 6th lap a caution flew for a car that expired in Turn 1. Murray restarts with Missy McAllister-Kerr just ahead of him in 4th. Then Darryl Campbell and Jay Bransom were behind leader Jeremy Willis. On the 2nd lap of the restart he works by Kerr. Two laps later he slaps the wall going down the front stretch and has to regroup a little. Then with about 4 to go, Bransom is dueling with Campbell for second place as they enter Turn 1. Murray follows them in high as they battle down low. They wash up a little in Turn 3 and Murray shoots out of the Apex and blows past them on the bottom as they enter the backstretch like they were parked! I wish I could have seen their faces when that happened!

You’ve seen the roadrunner blow by a truck on the road and the lettering is sucked off the doors for a minute as he passes? Well, I swear, I think I saw the graphics lift off their cars and settle back down after he was gone!

So, where does that leave us, coming up on 3 to go? Willis is several car lengths ahead by now. He’s led this race since Clark went off and has put some distance between himself and the rest of the field. Murray has him in his sights…. He continues to blast around the track, reeling him in slowly. He gains on him but it doesn’t look like there’s enough laps to make up the distance… Willis is a rocket and has been all night! He tears off down the backstretch with several car lengths between himself and Murray.

It looks to be all over when a car spins in Turn 4 doing a 360 and pulling back out onto the track! Willis tries to avoid him but can’t and wheel-hops over his front tire, almost causing him to hit the wall! Murray is blasting thru Turn 3 and sets his sights on the finish line. Willis somehow regains control and gets her headed for the flagstand and screams across the line just ahead of Murray in a finish that had everyone on their feet! You talk about exciting! It just don’t get no better than that!

I’ll see you at the races!

KSP Closes Out The Season In A Grand Way!
Monday, December 15, 2008 @ 08:41:40 Eastern Standard Time by rickysnider (332 reads)
KSP NewsNEAL writes
Kennedale Speedway Park closed out their season in “grand style” his year! The KSP Crew reserved the Grand Ole Stagecoach Ballroom in Ft. Worth for the occasion. Richard and several of his regular crew members arrived early to set up for the event. ABC Photography provided technical support for the video and slide show presentations. A large screen to show videos and slide shows were at center stage for the opening ceremonies.

A video produced by Mike Malone showcasing the IMCA Crate Late Models, new to KSP this year, played as the honored guests began to arrive providing an outstanding backdrop to the setting! Later on, a video produced by D&D Racing, showcased the Young Guns Shootout Events held at KSP this season. Allen and Cindy Burgess strolled in with an armload of 70 posters highlighting each of the top ten finishers in the seven divisions that raced at KSP this year! Those were hung on prominent display above the dining tables.

As the 7:00 hour rolled around, the guests started arriving in droves. Sandy, in a roll all too familiar, greeted them and collected the ticket stubs to be used for the door prizes to be given away throughout the evening. Speedway Motors provided a generous amount of products just for this. KSP added to the loot with gifts for the adults and kids as well! Sam Gibbons with the Smoke Pit BBQ had a feast prepared, complete with a chef to hand carve the brisket! The aroma of the feast waiting to be served was indeed tantalizing!

First things first… the dinner bell rung! Before you could turn around, the hungry guests fell in line for the “vittles”! They were greeted by the delightful smile on the face of Lily Snider who handed them the plate and hardware they would need. Then, the “Chef” carved them a generous portion of brisket and Sausage. Ricky provided BBQ sauce as they split into two lines for the side dishes. Here, Caleb and Hanna Grant along with Daltry Snider made sure that their feast was complete! Before too long, everyone was seated and dining with laughter and merry hearts abounding!

As the feasting began to wane and the guests started wondering what was next, without delay, Richard Snider took the stage and announced that a video was available for the guests to enjoy that would herald the top ten finishers in each division. ABC Photography had generously supplied their vast collection of 2008 track photos for the purpose of producing this treat!

In a scene reminiscent of many nights at the track, the various tables of assembled guests raised the roof with loud accolades as their driver of choice was shown on the screen! The excitement charged the room with an infectious spirit that is usually held in reserve only for race night!

With the conclusion of this program, the floor was cleared and the stage was set for the award presentations. Richard introduced Jerry Bransom and expressed gratitude for stepping up and making this all possible. Their love of the sport and dedication to the KSP facility is the catalyst that brought us all to this point. Speedway Motors door prizes were given away as the trophy presentations were being prepared and at regular intervals throughout the ceremony.

Championship Trophies that towered over their recipients were presented along with embroidered Track Championship Jackets. Sandy Lyons called out each driver as Janna McKay assisted Richard with the presentations. ABC Photography took photos of every presentation. Check with them for your special photo! A good turnout of drivers from each class left few trophies unclaimed! As each driver in their respective class received their prize, they assembled in front of the stage for group pictures by ABC Photography. Again, fervent accolades went out to the drivers as their names were called and they made their way to collect their awards!

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, a surprise was in store! Tony and Rachel Hernandez were on hand to provide the evening’s entertainment! An activity specifically designed to appeal to the competitive spirit of racers was developed by Tony for use at the Young Guns Shootout Banquet a few weeks back. Ricky Snider, an avid supporter of the Series, was on hand to help put on the show. Likely, that association led to Hernandez bringing the show to include in the evening’s festivities.

What it was? Well, there are two Tricycles… stripped down, you might say… “modified” models, with no pedals and only a bar for a seat! These “trikes” were designed to be used in a “team event format” that would require the cooperation of two participants to compete. One would supply the “power”, pushing the driver with only one foot as the other one was to remain on the trike. The catch, the one that would require the greatest amount of coordination between the teams, was the fact that the driver would be BLINDFOLDED! Yes, that’s right!... BLINDFOLDED! As you can see, the ability to communicate between the driver and pusher would be the key to their success!

When it was announced that a cash award would go to the winning team, the lineup for the chance to participate quickly formed. Everyone from championship drivers to wives and crew members were in line for a crack at the cash! No doubt, this was going to be good!

Junior Mini Standout Amerin Betteridge was among the first to race. He had a friend with him to complete their team. They lined up beside their competitors and took off like a rocket when the flagman gave the signal! Each round was an elimination round, kinda like a last man standing race. One race pitted the B&B Racing Team of Scotty Brown against the Blackburn Brothers! This match was a challenge match with additional money put up for the winners! In a scene that brought back flashes of what we see at the track, the two teams rounded the first turn bumping and grinding, wheels interlocked on their “open wheel chassis”. The Blackburns took a spill and had to regroup but mounted a strong challenge, pressing the B&B Team hard to the finish.

Jay Bransom and his wife participated in the elimination races as well as a host of others. One girl, Copper, took a spill in the first turn when her trike went left and she went right! Amerin Betteridge and his team mate were able to hold off all challengers and claim first prize! In their final round of eliminations, they were pitted against Devon Burgess and Justin Fowler. In this round, the drivers were not blindfolded, but the teams made one lap, then switched places and made another lap! Blazing speeds were seen from the teams as they sped around the “short track” with no sight restrictions.

A challenge match finished off this episode of Team Tricycle Mania when Richard Snider drove for Jay Bransom against Sandy Lyon driving for her husband Brad. Richard and Jay took a spill in the first turn that looked at first like it might take a wrecker to untangle, but they rallied back into shape and headed off down the front stretch. The resulting confusion called for a complete restart and Richard and Jay were in rare form for that race as they took the checkers for the win!! I think Richard went away from that event pondering on how to work in the track for the next race! Workin dirt was one thing, but this hardwood… well, that would require some study!

The evenings activities concluded with a Karaoke session and the DJ playing dance tunes. Justin McNeil took the stage to entertain the group with his unique and uninhibited ability to do so. He sang a song that I, of course, have never heard. The thing was, it had words AND sounds! And, I mean sounds that I don’t quite understand how he was able to make much less read! But, that comes from a different generation and, no doubt, they have a language all their own! He was entertaining to say the least!

Several of the party took to the dance floor as the evening began to wind down and the guests started to head toward home. Willis Price took this opportunity to test the waters for a singing career. With an open mike on the Karaoke stage, Willis belted out a tune for all he was worth, no doubt trying to hedge his bets in case he didn’t make it to NASCAR! Now, as those who know him can attest, Willis is quite the showman, a-n-d he c-a-n sing. But, perhaps a little more practice is needed before he hits the big time in either field! At any rate, he can always fall back on a career as a comedian… that’s what he does best!

A lingering air of nostalgia hung in the air as the last few hold outs prepared to leave the Stagecoach Ballroom. The evening presented vivid reminders of a great racing season at Kennedale Speedway Park that many held near and dear as they watched it come to a close. This year was one filled with difficulties we’ve not seen in many a year. High gas prices, stock market crashes, and job cuts with a strong dose of political uncertainty thrown in for good measure; that’s enough to dampen anyone’s spirits! But the American racing family will endure, as it has in the past. All of these challenges have threatened our sport in the past, yet we still race!

I believe that as long as we have breath, we will. You may ask why? Your answer is in the pictures from this banquet, and the straight forward thanks heard from the lips of Amerin Betteridge…. “I want to thank my parents for helping me to race, and for keeping me out of trouble” I believe the bottom line is this; we race because we do it as a family! America’s strength is in her families, and those families have always survived seemingly insurmountable odds! Kennedale Speedway Park offers those families a great place to spend time together doing something that they are all passionate about! We look forward to a great season in 2009!

The Storms Gathered And It Rained Cars At KSP!
Friday, August 22, 2008 @ 07:03:27 Eastern Daylight Time by RICKYSNIDER (364 reads)
KSP NewsNeal writes
The week prior to August 16th had been a stormy week over most of North Texas. Tracks all the way from Abilene to Devil’s Bowl were rained out! KSP was fortunate enough to have been spared the brunt of the storms and was able to go on with the show! With the SST Sprints and Winged 600 Mini Sprints scheduled to as an added attraction to the show, it was sure to be a good one!

When we first caught a glimpse of the pits from the road behind the track, all we could see was a sea of vehicles! The pits were PACKED! Not only were the SST Sprints and 600 Sprints well represented, but the rest of the classes were swollen as well! When the heat races were over and my car count tallied, I had 182 cars down in competition tonight. WOW! What a night to be here!!

I counted 14 Street Stocks, 8 Junior Minis, 8 IMCA Crate Models, 29 SST Sprints, 39 IMCA Modifieds, 26 IMCA Southern Sport Mods, 27 IMCA Hobby Stocks, 17 IMCA Stock Cars, and 14 Winged Mini Sprints! That is the largest car count I’ve seen at a regular Saturday night track in a while! The action would be HOT tonight! Twenty Two heat races!! That’s how many we saw before the B-Mains started! Then there were four B-Mains before the nine Feature races. Total that up and you find that there were 35 races held at KSP for the fans to watch…. Talk about getting your money’s worth! Well, we got a big bang for the buck tonight and the racing was outstanding!! There was a lot of sub-level moisture beneath the track so it stayed heavy all night but developed a few ruts. Those ruts were hard on the tires, but sure stirred the pot when it came to the competition.

The Street Stocks saw Duane Wolff continue his domination with his sixth win in a row. Since his return to this class, he has been tough! Starting in mid pack, it didn’t take him long to make his way to the front and set a quick pace to the checkers. Mike Golightly, Mike Dingman, John Abney and Sean Hill round out the top five.

The Junior Minis put on a good show. These young guns were lightning quick on this heavy surface. Amerin Betteridge was the car to beat, getting to the front and holding off the challenges of Colin Cloud, Devin Burgess, “Lightnin” Wright and Kyle Miller. Bryce Pritchett was battling Betteridge for the top spot when he popped his right front tire. He changed that tire and came out to restart at the rear of the field, but his bad luck wasn’t over and he popped another right front about two laps in. Hopefully he will get all his bad luck out of the way for the season ending Big Shows.

There were 8 IMCA Crate Late Models in the field tonight, the most we have seen thus far. They put on a good show, but we could tell that the ruts were a challenge for them. All of them, that is, except for Larry Lee. Larry Lee hit the track in only his second night out and smoked the competition! Those big wide tires on the Crates like a smooth, somewhat drier surface than what they had to race on tonight, but apparently Larry didn’t know about that… He drove that big yellow Crate Model around the turns like the track was as smooth as silk, weaving thru the traffic like my niece does on the way to work in Austin! I was in disbelief as I watched him handle the track conditions with ease and sail to the win! Long absent Doogie Hauser made his return tonight and was fast as well! He chased Larry to the checkers, finishing second ahead of Ronnie Davis, Darryl Campbell and Charlie Wilson.

And then the IMCA Modifieds stormed out on the track! It had taken four heats and two B-Mains to trim the entries to a 24 car field! Dwaine Powers, Jay Bransom, Varian Sisson and Jeff Turner were the heat winners…. Yes! I said Jeff Turner! He was in Scotty Brown’s backup car and was lightning fast! Word was he was going to Boone with the B&B Team and this car. The B-main winners were Chad Estes and Jeremy Willis. SO… let’s see, that’s six races and six different winners. Who would you put your money on? Dwaine Powers started on the pole and set a fast pace for several laps. OH! Did I mention that Keith White was here? Yes! He was here in a modified and started back in mid pack. But he worked his way to the front, getting by Bobby Ruffin, Jeremy Willis, Chad Estes and Missy McAllister-Kerr to take the checkers! Did you see that? Missy finished fifth! What a showing for this female speed racer!! She’s having a banner year, proving once again she can run with the best! But Keith White showed his muscle in a modified, working his way to the front of a pack of mighty tough customers to win this one!

The IMCA Stock Cars were up next and with 17 in the field, they were sure to be fun to watch. Jeff Turner and Chad Estes were the heat winners. Duain Pritchett came in second in both heats…. NO! Wait a minute, well….. at least his cars did! As a matter of fact, BJ “Field Filler” Dulock was in one of those cars again and proved to the fans that he not only can “talk the talk”, but, he can “walk the walk!” This race saw several visitors due to the rainouts in the area….. folks like Tina Gordon, Doug Kennemer, David Acosta and Kirk Martin up from 281 Speedway. Boyd’s own Keith Lunsford made a rare appearance at KSP as well. But, the race went to those two Pritchett cars, only this time, Duain was driving the old one and BJ was in the new one. Yes! They pulled the old switcheroo on me and I didn’t know it until Duain got out of the car in the Winner’s Circle. Orange was the color of the evening as Robert Ferron took 3rd in his orange #23, Jeff Turner in 4th and Tony Rime in 5th.

How about the IMCA Hobby Stocks? Well, after three heats and one B-Main to set the field, they hit the track with a vengeance. Heat winners were Justin Fowler, Charles Cosper and Jeremy Carter. Tracy Haynes won the B-Main. Like I said earlier, the track was tough on tires tonight and Jason Runkles had a flat while running 2nd. Justin Fowler had one and had to restart last. Then, after working his way to 5th he had another RR flat which caused him to finish 14th. Brandon Taylor, who finished 2nd to Fowler in their heat race, ran most of this race in 2nd as well and looked like he would finish there. But, he lost a wheel in the closing laps and had to watch his best run fizzle! He will be back!! Charles Cosper continued his momentum and saw the checkers fly for him over Runkles, (who recovered well from his flat), David Bissonnette, Jeff Kinnaird and Andy Roller. This was a great race by some outstanding drivers!!

IMCA Sport Mods were last but not least! Chase Jupe, Keith White and Jay Bransom were the heat winners. Marvin Skinner came to race in his new car and started on the pole. He pulled out to an early lead and set a blistering pace. This race had a few anxious moments when the 55 of Justin Shaw from Swee*****er, Texas stalled on the backstretch and the #12W of Gary Fox swerved to avoid him but caught the left rear of the car, launching him into the air and causing him to barrel roll several times! His car looked awful but he was able to crawl out unharmed and walked around inspecting his car. A big sigh of relief went up from the fans when it was announced that Gary was OK! The race continued with Marvin dominating throughout, right up to the last lap! Keith White slammed into the back of Jay Bransom when Jay had to gather the car back up in turn 2, ending his run at the checkers. By the halfway mark, Dean Abbey was in second and dogged Skinner right up to the last lap. As they raced out of turn 4 heading for the checkers, Dean dove under Skinner, making contact with him as they fought their way to the finish. Abbey was able to just pull ahead and steal the win from Skinner by a few inches!

And… Lets don’t forget about the SST Sprints, headliners of tonight’s show! There were 29 of those winged monsters on hand and it took 4 heats and a B-Main to set this field also! Josh Majors, Marty Stanford, Ed French and Jason Howell were the heat winners. Mike George won the B-Main. With the track heavy, they had to watch getting thru the corners; those big tires were hooking up and tried to tip some of the cars as they swept thru the turns! But, the racing was downright fun to watch and they put on a great show! It was all about the Beechlers tonight! Ryan and his dad Ron finished 1st and 2nd making their way to the front from the second row and showing the way to the checkers in short order! Marty Stamford, Mike Herring and Jerry Hammock round out the top five.

The Winged 600 Mini Sprints were well represented with 14 on hand to compete for top honors. Tyler Russell was the winner in their A-Main.

With the weather unseasonably moist for late August in Texas, we were fortunate to be able to see any racing at all in this area. We can only hope the weather breaks in time to dry the track out for this weekend’s show. If KSP is one of the tracks lucky enough to race this weekend, be sure and be there!! It will no doubt be a barn burner again!! Until then, Neal.

T-Shirts Fly Into The Stands
Thursday, August 14, 2008 @ 13:05:27 Eastern Daylight Time by RICKYSNIDER (385 reads)
KSP NewsNeal writes
T-Shirts were flying into the stands during the intermission at KSP Saturday night. The race team of Levi Hodges sponsored the flying t-shirts and, in a scene reminiscent of ones I’ve seen at much larger events, a t-shirt cannon was employed to launch the t-shirts into the stands from out on the track. I was over in the pits when this scene began to unfold and at first I wasn’t sure what was going down. I heard screaming coming from the fans in the stands and upon first glance I thought perhaps a popular driver, you know, someone like Jacob Pirkle or Jeff Turner or perhaps Darryl Campbell, was walking the track and a war had broken out to see which section could show the most support! As I was trying to figure out who it might be, I heard the cannon go off, launching a t-shirt into the stands and the fans jumping to try and retrieve it! WOW! What a cool way to promote your race team and give back to the fans!! These guys really took it to a new level! It was great to see the Hodges team do this for the fans! Outstanding team promotion guys!

There were nine Junior Minis on hand to race and they really came to race! The Heat race was won by Amerin Betteridge. In the Feature for these young stars of tomorrow, a mid race pileup in turn 4 looked to have taken out three of the contenders, Colin Cloud, Amerin Betteridge and Calton Pritchett, but as it turned out, two of them were able to make repairs and return. Calton was the only one unable to return. Devin Burgess was fast and smooth, taking the win over Betteridge who worked his way back up from the rear of the field, Bryce Pritchett who had engine trouble in the heat, ran strong in this race, Zacary Raybourn who picked his way thru the mishaps to secure fourth and Don Yeargen who ran strong but suffered a position robbing spin to finish in fifth.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks put on an exciting show as some bumping and grinding exposed frayed nerves and hot tempers between some of the drivers. A struggle over a preferred line between Allen Montgomery and Justin Fowler resulted in Allen jumping over a tractor tire and, as he came down nose first, it looked for a second like he might go end over end! He recovered, settled the car back on all four and continued on, seemingly unscathed! Charles Cosper survived all the struggles and took the checkers over Chris Hughes, Eric Swift, Colt Lancer and Justin “McNizzle” McNeil.

The IMCA Stock Cars were very competitive again, not that it’s a surprise. John McNeil won the heat race holding off hard charges by Pritchett, Estes and Turner. John is proving to be a serious threat to the Turner / Pritchett Dynasty! I expect to see him in Victory Lane ahead of those guys soon! Take those four names and shuffle them to get the finishing order in the Feature! Turner and Estes ran door-to-door  for the first half of the race, neither one being able to gain an advantage! But, after the halfway point, Turner was able to pull ahead of Estes and hold on for the win! Estes, Pritchett, McNeil and Robert Ferron round out the top 5.

The Sport Mods were out in force tonight as they had to run a B-Main to qualify the starting field for the Feature! Blake Baccus, George Gafford, Justin Blackburn and Curtis Young were the heat race winners. Jacob Pirkle won the B-Main over Gary Fox, Martel Kerr, Kayla Maxey and Corey Range. Did you catch that?? Kayla Maxey comes home in fourth in the B-Main!! Outstanding run for this former Young Gun!! The Feature race was interesting. Jeff Turner broke during the heat race and had to borrow a car from Brandon Ruffin. Starting back in mid pack he drove the borrowed car to a sixth place finish. Kayla Maxey had trouble right off the bat and left on the hook. Very unfortunate considering the momentum she had going! But George Gafford was on track tonight, winning the race over Dean Abbey, Jeff Emerson, Justin Blackburn and Jacob Pirkle.

How about the Modifieds?? Twenty-five cars were entered in the heats. Chad Estes had his car here as did Dillon Smith, Charles Armstrong, Jeff Emerson, Chad Melton and Kevin Watson, adding to the car count. Heat winners Chad Estes, Dillon Smith, and Jeff Emerson were all serious contenders, but Estes was not to be denied as he held off Jeremy Willis, Bobby Ruffin, Nicholas Littlejohn and Glen Hibbard for the Feature win. Jason Ilich, Darryl Campbell and Scotty Brown all had trouble and finished in the back of the field. Chad, in his new Hoffman Chassis, had the car dialed in tonight and was bad fast all night! This Central Texas Hot Shoe has both of his new cars running well and is providing the local hot shoes some real competition!

The Crate Late Models had six cars here tonight and gave us a taste of what to expect when this class comes into its own. These cars look great out on the clay oval and with the drivers beginning to get a good handle on the setups, their performances are getting better and better! Jason Ilich won the heat but had mechanical trouble in the Feature and had to drop out. Jay Bransom had his car dialed in and won the race over Eric Winnett, Larry Lee Charlie Wilson and Darryl Campbell.

Street Stock action was fast and furious as always. Tim Murray and Duane Wolff were the heat winners. Duane Wolf backed up his heat win with another strong finish, racking up his fifth in a row! Duane started on the fifth row outside and had to work his way thru tough traffic and survive several cautions. Tim Murray led several laps and looked to have the race well in hand, but the cautions kept the field bunched and Duane was able to catch him and grab the checkers again!

What Numbers Were Hot On August 2nd
Monday, August 04, 2008 @ 15:34:56 Eastern Daylight Time by RICKYSNIDER (350 reads)
KSP NewsNeal writes
One, two, four or eight; It seemed that if you had a chance to win tonight at KSP, you had to have one of these numbers on your car! Duane Wolff in the #1 Street Stock was the first A-Main winner of the evening. Double that #1 and you will have the winner of the Junior Mini Feature, none other than the #2 of Amerin Betteridge. Double that #2 and it will reveal the winner of the Hobby Stock Feature, the #4 of Chase Neill. Put another #4 beside that one and you will have the winner of the Modified Feature, the #44 of Scotty Brown. Divide that number by 2 and you will get the winner of the I-Stock race, only you would have to have been there to know that B.J. Dulock of CenTex Motorsports was actually behind the wheel of Duain Pritchett’s back-up car, the old #22. Add all those numbers up and you will get the #146 which don’t tell you nothing… but, if you add a 2 to that, you will discover the winner of the Sport Mod race, the #148 of Donnie Blackburn. Take the modified race cars out of the picture and add up the numbers on the doors of the stock car winners and you will have the winner of the Crate Late Model Feature, the #29 of Jay Bransom. Now, just what is the significance of all this banter? Heck, I don’t know… It just seemed odd to me that those numbers kept turning up in the winner’s circle.

What I do know is, forgetting the numbers, the racing was as hot as the weather! Duane Wolff has logged four feature wins in a row, and has only finished out of the top spot once since July 3rd. Tim Murray took a pretty good run at him tonight, but was unable to knock him out of the top spot.

The Junior Minis were well represented tonight with ten cars on the lineup board. The trouble was, they had a rough night, loosing the 21 of Bryce Pritchett to a blown motor and a couple of others to mishaps, including the 22 of Calton Pritchett. Calton’s been on a run of bad luck lately, and it looks like it’s still doggin him. Amerin Betteridge survived an on track incident that took the other car out but spared him. He did suffer cosmetic damage but the handling was unaffected and he went on to win the A-Main.

The IMCA Modifieds were charged up tonight and with Chad Estes starting on the pole in his new car, it looked like he might be the car to beat. He shot off the line and set a blistering pace around the track, stretching out a pretty healthy lead over the rest of the field. However, with a couple of cautions bunching the field and some of the cars working their way up thru traffic, his lead began to see some challenges. Darryl Campbell who started on the second row found his groove and was running strong, it was good to see him up front, but apparent mechanical issues took him out with 2 to go.

Matt Martin, Bobby Ruffin and Scotty Brown all started together in mid pack. The cars were all so competitive tonight that it took some real driving skills to work thru traffic. I watched this trio work their way to the front and they really put on a show! They were runnin high, dodgin low, cutting thru the middle and workin that traffic like their tails were on fire! It was great!

When it was over, Scotty had squeezed by Estes when he made a bobble coming out of turn 2. If Estes hit his marks in that turn he would shoot down the back stretch like he was shot from a cannon. But, there was a rut there that gave him some grief if he hit it and Scotty was able to capitalize on one of those times. Estes had a stranglehold on second and finished just ahead of Ruffin, Martin and Jeremy Willis to round out the top 5. Jason Ilich, Trevor Egbert, Mike Miles, Ron Vandiver and Damon Hammond complete the list of top 10 cars in this exciting and very competitive race!

Duain Pritchett, now there is always something going on in their pit! These guys just know how to have a good time! Duain pulls into the pits with a new race car, painted to match the one he’s been driving all year. I told him I wanted a picture before he bent it! Well, he’s runnin a little late and in a hurry to hot lap the new car so he suits up, straps in while it’s still on the trailer, backs it off and heads straight for the track. I snap a couple of shots as he’s leaving and hope he doesn’t get it too muddy hot lapping! Well, I see him heading back to the pit after the practice laps and notice the tires on the right side are white walled! We soon find out that he hit some mud leaving the track and slapped the wall in the exit shoot! Of course, he was met with a hearty round of jests as he clambered out of the new car! But, he took it all in stride, wearing that ornery grin he is famous for the whole time! I holler at him to strike a pose before he leaves the car to which he declares, “Ah Neal, I don’t want my picture took”. I convince him that he does and I get one before he gets away.

They brought the old car to the track and B.J. Dulock was lined up to drive it. And drive it he did! He started on the front row and never looked back! Chad Estes gave him a good chase and of course Turner and Pritchett were breathing down his neck, but ole’ B.J. stole the show tonight. Now, they say it’s easy to win from the front row, and sometimes that’s true, but with the level of competition you see at KSP in this class, you aint gonna win too easy! Dulock, Turner, Estes, Pritchett, McNeill, Rime, Ferron, Rasor, Wofford and Price round out the top 10.

How about the IMCA Southern Sport Mods; who are we gonna talk about here…. Let’s start with Kayla Maxey. She’s doing a great job in her car racing against some of the best in the nation every week here at KSP! She got tangled up in a mess during her heat race, but came back out for the Feature and finished a very respectable eighth out of 14 cars! Watching her drive, you would never guess she is a teenage girl. But then, most of the ones I deal with aren’t on a race track, their on a street or highway putting on makeup while talking on a cell phone and trying to drive! But I suspect Kayla’s smarter than that! At least I’ve not seen her doing such in her race car. She’s too busy trying to race the boyz! Keep it up Kayla, we’ll see you in victory lane in due time!

As for the rest of the field, well this was Justin Blackburn’s night to shine! Not only did his team do a candy call for the kids, but he won the feature race as well! The number four seemed to be significant in the show tonight as the 148 of Blackburn, the 41 of Jacob Pirkle and the 4 of Jeff Turner were front runners all night. That is until Turner suffered a right-rear flat and had to pull out of the race. This left Blackburn and Pirkle to battle for the checkers, and battle they did! Pirkle was all over the leader and the last lap was an all out dash for the finish line! With Blackburn getting the win, Pirkle, Jason Ilich, George Gafford, Dean Abbey, George Egbert, Chase Jupe, Kayla Maxey, Corey Range and Brandon Ruffin round out the top 10.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks were hot tonight as well! It looked like it was going to be all about the fours in that race as well! The 44 of Brian Sewell and the 48 of Justin Fowler were door to door in an all out duel for the lead at the halfway mark when Fowler had a tire go down and cause him to spin. He changed the tire and came back out, but it appeared his suspension had suffered damage and he was unable to make up the lost ground. Soon after that, the 4 of Chase Neill who had barely missed being collected by the spin of Fowler, rose to battle Sewell for the lead, but during the next caution, Sewell pulled off with mechanical issues and it was all about Chase Neill from there on out! He won the race with Charles Cosper, Eric Swift, Brandon Taylor, Allen Montgomery, the one and only “McNizzle”, Jeremy Montgomery, Alvin Emery, Chip Trueblood and Justin Fowler rounding out the top 10. And yes… take a look at that 4th place car piloted by rookie driver Brandon Taylor! Good finish for this former Young Gun who is starting to figure this Hobby Stock class out!

And that leaves us with the Crate Late Models. This fledgling class is struggling to get up and going, but not more so than just about any new class we have seen across the years. But the guys that are sticking with the effort are sure doing a great job of figuring those dirt beasts out! Darryl Campbell looked the best I’ve seen him in his heat race. He was sailing around the oval as smooth as silk and was lightening fast! It’s good to see him get that car figured out and running so well! The Feature race went to Jay Bransom who seemed to have a better setup for the drier track conditions than they had in the heat. Darryl struggled in this race and wasn’t as competitive as he was earlier but I’m sure he’ll continue to tweak on it and get it figured out.  Jason Ilich, Ronnie Davis, Darryl Campbell and Charlie Wilson round out the finishing order for this race.
That concludes another great night of racing at Kennedale Speedway Park! With race teams that include several of the nations top drivers and some of the hottest rookies, they always put on a great show! If you weren't there, you should have been! I'll see ya at the races! Neal.

YGS at KSP

KSP News

Williams takes the Win; Dudley steals the show..

Twenty-five Jr Mini Stock Cars came to KSP Friday night in the forth of eight scheduled events for 2008, all of which wanted a shot of knocking Dodd City's Shelby Williams off the top.
The night started with Grayson County Speedway's Chance Whitworth taking Heat Race #1 win, followed by Williams taking heat #2, and hometrack hot shoe #2a Amerin Betteridge winning heat #3.

The A-main start decided by passing point format landed another KSP favorite, #64 Devin Burgess on the pole for the scheduled 25 lap feature event. YGS procedures require the last feature race winner to start the rear of the field, and other previous winners start at the end of heat race qualifying cars, Williams and Whitworth started 15th and 20th respectively.
From the drop of the green flag, the top positions were switching spots without switching paint. Early cautions slowed the progress of Williams and Grayson County favorite #32 Mithchell Clement, sending both to the rear of the field. At the restart, both were back on the move, all the while #64 Burgess, #5 Dustin Mooney, #15 Brad Dudley, and #98 Chris Miller, all battling for the top spot.
As the feature event had several cautions, YGS officials had to make the decision to cut the race five laps short, as we were already past the KSP curfew, several of the front runners encountered some tough luck during the middle laps of the race, Dudley took charge of the top position. As laps winded down, Williams and Whitworth were making there way torwards the front. On lap 15, YGS top runner Mooney had engine woes and had pulled to the infield, leaving the battle to Dudley, 2007 YGS Champ Tyler Plum, and the charging Williams.
At the checker, it was #821 followed pretty close by #15 of Dudley, and 17x Plum. GCS regular Chance Whitworth found his way to forth, as pole sitter Devin Burgess made his way back to 5th after bad luck put at the rear of the field during a mid race caution.

During Intermission, the YGS series had a Top 9 in points Bicycle race sponsored by Lake Country Speedway. YGS drivers coupled with ASCS sprint drivers like Kevin Ramey, Kolt Walker, Travis Rilat, Michael "Spike" Lang, Skip Wilson, George White, Trey Robb, and others to complete the field. This wasn't your normal "bike race". "16 boys and girls training bikes were used, the teams had to push their partner about 40 yards, turn around, switch out and get back to the flagstand. A couple of tore up bicycles and screams of "they cheated" later, the team of Brad Dudley and Kolt Walker took Ronny Goulds money. The moral to this race; Don't forget to have a little fun!"

Next show for the YGS will be back at KSP in early October.

Price is right for June’s ‘Hot Shot’ contest award
Friday, June 20, 2008 @ 12:13:10 Eastern Daylight Time by N_Jones (774 reads)
KSP NewsARLINGTON, Texas June 1

Willis Price’s previous career highlight was a hard heat race fight for first with Jerry West in an IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock a couple seasons back. Now a rookie in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division, he now ranks winning this month’s Woody’s Hot Shot of the Month contest atop the list. “This is the biggest thing that’s happened to me since I started racing,” said Price, certainly among the happiest drivers to be notified of their selection. “This is even bigger than beating Jerry.”

A Saturday night regular at Kennedale Speedway Park, Price will receive four congratulatory decals, 12 window decals and a dozen custom T-shirts from Woody’s Signs. He’ll also be entered in the overall Hot Shot contest for 2008. Price had 20 years of drag racing experience under his belt when he moved to Arlington. He was still unloading the truck when he heard neighbor Alan Hossler start his Modified up. The two became fast friends and Price would eventually crew for Hossler. Hossler put him in his first race car and also introduced him to fellow hotshoe Darryl Campbell. Campbell, in turn, helped Price get his start in the sanctioned Hobby Stocks. After a handful of outings in 2004 at Kennedale, Price took 2005 off before getting in six races at Boyd in 2006 and joining the weekly grind at KSP the following year.

Price, who is black, campaigned in a Hobby Stock with a paint scheme paying tribute to Wendell Scott, the only black driver to win a race in what is now the Sprint Cup Series. “That wasn’t my motivation to race. I race because I love racing,” he said. “I don’t do it because it’s an ethnic thing. It’s not a black thing or a white thing. The track officials, wrecker crews, fans and drivers in every class have been great. I’ve never had a problem with racism. I race for me, no ifs, ands or buts.” “I’ve been a NASCAR fan since I was a kid and I had uncles who raced in California,” Price added. “Now I get to race with some of the toughest guys in the nation. Who could ask for anything more? A young lady by the name of Tasha McNeil, a Stock Car driver, told me once, ‘I’m a girl, and if I can do this, so can you.’ Fellow drivers in all classes inspire me to keep on having fun. I may never win a race, but I have fun every week.”

His wife Ruth is Price’s official crew chief and co- car owner. He can also count on top runners like John McNeil, Charlie Wilson, Scotty Brown, Jeff Turner, Duain Pritchett and Bryan Sewell for help at the track. None of this would be possible without the help of Darryl Campbell and Lyle Smith of Destroyer Chassis.

Sponsors for the number 26 car include Destroyer Chassis, Performance Transmissions and Tees for Texas, all of Kennedale; WRP Racing and B & B Automotive, both of Arlington; Velocity of Texas, Euless; TexasmadeTrailers of Greenville; Mesco Building Solutions of Southlake; Trackannouncer.com of Fort Worth; Pritchett Designs of Houston; Wells Cylinder Heads of Midlothian; McCoy Hobbies of McCoy; Petrus Interior Systems of San Antonio; and B & B Ready Mix and Southside Graphics, both of Dallas.
